Galvanizing helps, but salt in the air and water, high humidity and extreme weather, industrial fumes, use in dissimilar metals, driver blade impact and exposure to chemicals can break down the zinc coating. The fastener may rust.

Also, when wet, the tannin acid in cedar and redwood can react with the plating to create dark stains. Preservatives and fire retardants in wood may contain salts corrosive to the fastener. Additional issues can also negatively affect coatings which are not limited to but could include decomposing or otherwise decayed materials being fastened, inappropriate use or installation, neglect, misuse or alteration.
